Allergies in children

Allergies in children are basically their immune system reacting to allergens (allergy causing substances). In most children the allergies are harmless. Allergens trigger allergic reactions in children and also adults. If someone is prone to allergens then their immune system overreacts, and treats allergens as dangerous to the body. The immune system treats these allergens like viruses or bacteria.

At Isha Speciality Clinics Dr.Swathy gives excellent treatments to children suffering from allergies.

When to immediately take the child to the doctor for an allergic reaction?

Though most of the times the allergies are harmless but if the child exhibits any of the following symptoms please take them to a doctor immediately:
  • Difficulty in breathing or gasping for breath.
  • Swollen lips, tongue, or throat
  • The skin is changing its colour into blue or skin Is turning pale.
  • The child faints or is dizzy
  • Fast beating heart
  • Vomiting and nausea

  • Unknown reasons for allergy triggers
  • Anaphylaxis – serious life threatening reaction to allergies.
  • Uncontrollable Asthma or eczema

How are allergies treated?

Dr.Swaty Talishetty suggests focusing on avoiding the triggers, and controlling symptoms. Below are the various ways to approach allergies in children:

Avoid the triggers

  • Check if the food items have an allergy causing ingredients such as peanuts, dairy, eggs and avoid them. If the child is going to a daycare or school please make sure to inform them as well. Parents must read labels and inform caregivers.
  • If the child has environment triggered allergies such as dust pollen then make sure that the exposure to these allergens is minimised for the child.
  • Avoid exposing the child to places with insects and bugs if the child is allergic to any of such allergens.

Medications

In some cases the child is given the following medication to get relief from symptoms such as sneezing, itching, rashes, or breathing issues:
  • Antihistamines: They block the chemical that is causing allergic symptoms (histamine). Please select a non drowsy option for daytime use otherwise the child won’t be able to go to school or carry on any of their physical activities because they feel very sleepy.
  • Nasal Corticosteroids: These medications help in reducing the inflammation of the nose there by giving symptomatic relief.
  • Leukotriene Receptor Antagonists: These medications give relief from asthma.
  • Topical Corticosteroids: Provides relief from eczema or allergic skin reactions.
  • Epinephrine Auto-Injectors (EpiPen): These are injections given during an episode of anaphylaxis. If the child has a history of anaphylaxis then epipen must be with the child at all times.

Other Therapies

  • Allergy Shots (Immunotherapy): Immunotherapy is preferred when the symptoms are severe and the medication is also not working.
  • Sublingual Immunotherapy: Allergy controlling tablets are placed under the tongue everyday. They are a good alternative for injections.

Monitoring and Action Plans:

  • Once a child is known to be prone to allergies it is good to monitor them and follow up with the pediatric doctor to adjust their medication.
